Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Here you'll find answers to common questions about my approach, the online process, and our work together. My aim is to be as clear as possible. If your question isn't answered here, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Q: What makes your approach to therapy different?
A: Instead of focusing only on a diagnosis or a problem, we look at the whole person—your mind, your body, and your sense of purpose are all interconnected. While my work is grounded in established therapeutic principles, our sessions are less about 'fixing' a problem and more about building on your inherent strengths. It is a partnership where we uncover the wisdom you already hold.
Q: What does a session actually feel like?
A: A session is, first and foremost, a grounded and compassionate conversation in a confidential space. Depending on your needs, and always with your permission, we might also use simple, practical tools like mindfulness exercises to calm the nervous system or body-awareness techniques to release tension. The focus is always on what feels supportive and helpful to you in the moment.
Q: Do I have to be spiritual to benefit?
A: Not at all. When I speak of "spirit," I'm referring to your sense of purpose, your core values, and what makes life feel meaningful to you. We work within your own belief system, whether secular, spiritual, or anything in between. The work is about connecting with your most authentic self.
Q: Who is this therapy best suited for?
A: This approach is designed for adults who are ready to do more than just manage symptoms. It is for those who want to understand themselves more deeply and build a more resilient, authentic life. It is particularly helpful for navigating the pressures of adulthood (30-60+), including stress, anxiety, life transitions, and the unique challenges men often face.
Q: Are there situations where this isn't the right fit?
A: Yes. This online service is not suitable for individuals in acute crisis, experiencing active psychosis, or requiring emergency psychiatric care. In these situations, more intensive, in-person support is essential for your safety. We can discuss suitability during our initial consultation.
Q: Is online therapy effective and confidential?
A: Yes. Research confirms that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns. Confidentiality is fundamental to my work. Our sessions are held on a secure platform, and I adhere strictly to the ethical codes of the SACSSP and privacy regulations like POPIA. Your privacy is paramount.
Q: What are your fees?
A: My standard fee is R600 per 50-minute session. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots based on financial need; please feel free to inquire.
Q: Do you accept Medical Aid?
A: I do not process claims directly with medical aids. After payment, you will receive a detailed invoice that you can submit to your medical aid. Depending on your plan, you may be able to claim for services provided by a Registered Social Worker. Please check directly with your provider about their specific reimbursement policy.
Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: I require at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a session. This respects both your time and mine. Sessions cancelled with less notice may be charged the full fee, except in the case of an unavoidable emergency.
Q: What is the first step?
A: The first step is to schedule a confidential, initial consultation. This is a dedicated time for us to discuss what's bringing you to therapy and to see if we are a good fit for this important work. You can schedule one by visiting the Contact Page.
Q: What happens in our first session?
A: Think of it as a no-pressure conversation. We'll talk about your current challenges and your hopes for the future. It's your opportunity to ask me any questions and get a feel for my approach. We will also cover practical details like scheduling. There is no obligation to continue if it doesn't feel right for you.
Q: How often will we meet, and for how long?
A: We typically begin with weekly sessions to build a strong foundation. The frequency and total duration of therapy, however, are flexible and depend entirely on your unique needs and goals. This is always a collaborative decision that we will review together as our work progresses.
